Are you struggling to get your child to listen to you?

Do you feel it is difficult to discipline your child without yelling or punishing?

Today I will share a few strategies and tips that I follow to disciplining my child without yelling or punishing.

1. Connect with your child

When you connect at a deeper level with your child, you get to understand him or her better and can find the root cause behind such behavior of your child. When a child feels deeply connected with you, he or she willingly follow what you have to say.

 

 I have experienced this with my child. He listens to all my instructions and follows it happily. No, not because I am lucky, but because I have a strong positive connection with him.

 

So, try replacing punishment with connection and see the magic happening.

2. Establish a routine

Kids love routine. They behave well and stay calm when they know what’s next. Creating a daily schedule and sticking to it will help your child feel more in control. Stick to it even on weekends and holidays.

 

 

3. Show Empathy

Understand what your child is going through and acknowledge his or her feelings. Put aside your own feelings to see the situation through your child’s eyes. Be empathetic towards your child. Use empathetic statements like “I am sorry”, “I understand”, “I know”, etc.

4. Listen to your child

Everyone wants to feel heard and a child is no exception.

 

If you want your child to listen to you, then you need to listen to him or her first. What your child says may sometimes sound silly or unimportant to you, but still, you should pause and listen to him or her.

 

When a child feels heard, he becomes more receptive and listens better, and also develops respect for you.

5. Praise and reward your child

Praise every good act of your child. If you praise your child for his good behavior, then he will do it more often to get your attention.

 

Start a reward system. For example, give your child a star immediately after each good behavior. Once they achieve their required number of stars, reward them with a treat. The treat can be anything like visiting the zoo, offering them their favorite food, telling one extra story at bedtime. This technique works wonderfully. You will soon notice a lot of improvements in your child’s behavior.

6. Be a role model for your child

Set a positive example for your child by being careful about what you do and say. A child is very good at copying the actions of his or her parents. When he or she watches you losing temper when things go wrong, he or she is going to do the same. So, you have to be extra careful about how you react under certain circumstances.

7. Let your child be a child

We parents sometimes set a higher expectation from a child. A child can’t behave like an adult. His or her brain is still growing. He or she is still learning life skills and can’t handle all emotions as we do.  So, expecting perfectionism from a child is mere foolishness. Let the child be a child. Let them enjoy their childhood.
